The Swiss voting population will decide on the approval of the Economic Partnership Agreement between the EFTA States and Malaysia, and the Federal Chancellery confirmed on 15 October 2026 that the referendum has been formally concluded against the corresponding Federal Decision.
On 5 October, the Referendums Committee had submitted 60’347 signatures, of which 59’866 are deemed to be valid after the official examination. The required threshold of 50’000 valid signatures is therefore exceeded.
The optional referendum allows for a vote on certain parliamentary decisions, including those relating to international treaties. The confirmation of the Federal Chancellery concerns first of all the procedure: it notes that there are sufficiently valid signatures.
The communication does not call a voting date, which is determined by the Federal Council. For the further debate it is therefore necessary to distinguish between the now final examination of the signatures and the later decision on the urn.
